What is Brownies All About?
Brownies is for girls aged 7 to 10. Brownies gives you the chance to get together with other girls of a similar age and to make some new friends while having lots of fun and taking part in all sorts of different activities.
Brownies is part of Girlguiding and there is a different section for each age group.
In 1914, a junior section of Guides was created called Rosebuds, later renamed Brownies. The name comes from the story "The Brownies" by Juliana Horatia Ewing, written in 1870. In the story two children, Tommy and Betty, learn how to be helpful Brownies.
Read The Brownie Story at the bottom of this page.
When a new Brownie joins, she will complete the Becoming a Brownie Booklet, then make her promise at a Promise ceremony and become part of the largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women, with around half a million members!
The Brownie Promise
I promise that I will do my best,
to be true to myself and develop my beliefs,
to serve my Queen and my community,
to help other people
and to keep the Brownie Guide Law.

Brownie Adventure
The Brownie Adventure is divided into three areas:
-
you
-
community
-
world
You: Brownies develop confidence and self-esteem through having new experiences and learning new skills. They build friendships and learn to share and cooperate with others by working together in small groups called 'Sixes'. They get a say in what happens at Brownies through discussions or 'Pow-wows', which help them develop decision-making skills and the ability to put their views across.
Community: We encourage girls to become active citizens by helping them understand and participate in their communities. This could mean raising money for charities or visiting local places of interest.
World: Our programme encourages girls to learn about the wider world. Activities could involve celebrating a festival from a different culture, finding out about endangered animal species, or learning how they can combat climate change.

Brownies are also encouraged to work towards earning badges, Click on the badge book to go badges and badge placement page.
